Starting Seeds Indoors:

Start your chive seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost. Fill a seed tray with a well-draining seed-starting mix, and lightly press the seeds into the surface. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil, as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist and place the tray in a warm, sunny location or under grow lights. Seeds should germinate in 10-14 days. Once the seedlings are 2-3 inches tall, they can be transplanted into your garden or larger pots, ensuring they have well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight.

Sowing Seeds Outside Directly:

If you prefer to sow your chive seeds directly outside, wait until the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Prepare the soil by removing any weeds and loosening it with a garden fork. Sow the seeds thinly, about 1/4 inch deep, and cover them lightly with soil. Keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate, which should take 10-14 days. Once the seedlings are established, thin them to about 6 inches apart to give each plant room to grow. Regularly water the plants, especially during dry periods, and enjoy the fresh chives in your culinary creations.
