Description

Antique Peony Poppy ‘Flemish’ is a showstopper in the garden, renowned for its large, ruffled, fully double blooms that resemble antique peonies in full glory. Petals swirl in layers of cream, blush, and deep crimson, creating a vintage, painterly effect that brings romance and old-world charm to flower beds and borders. Plants reach three to four feet tall and sway gracefully in summer breezes, making them stunning both in the garden and in fresh arrangements.

I found our seed produces lighter and whiter coloring- they remind me of roses before they open fully.

Antique Peony Poppy ‘Flemish Papaver seeds are small and prefer light to germinate, so careful sowing is key. Poppies prefer cool soil conditions, so you can direct sow seeds outdoors in early spring as soon as the ground can be worked, or in late fall for natural cold stratification. Simply scatter the seeds thinly on the soil surface and press them in gently without covering them, as they need light to germinate. Water lightly to settle the seeds but avoid overwatering, which can displace them. Thin seedlings to eight to ten inches apart once they are a few inches tall to allow room for mature plants.

For earlier blooms, seeds can also be started indoors four to six weeks before the last frost date. Use shallow trays filled with a well-draining seed mix. Since poppy roots dislike disturbance, starting them in biodegradable pots that can be transplanted directly into the garden works best. Lightly press the seeds into the soil surface and keep them cool, around 55 to 60°F, for best germination. Placing the seeded trays in the fridge for one to two weeks before moving them to a bright location can mimic winter conditions and speed germination, a process known as cold stratification.

Antique Peony Poppies thrive in full sun and average, well-drained soil. Once established, they are low maintenance and drought tolerant. Expect blooms in early to midsummer, about seventy-five to ninety days after sowing. Deadheading spent flowers can prolong the blooming season, while leaving some pods to mature provides decorative seed heads for arrangements or natural reseeding the following year. With minimal effort, these vintage beauties reward you with a summer display that looks as if it were painted by the masters.
