Leeks are a cool-season crop, making them an excellent choice for cultivation in Alaska. They thrive in full sun with light, well-drained soil, performing better in heavier soils than onions. Since they have a relatively long growing season (80-120 days), it’s best to start seeds indoors 4 to 10 weeks before the average last frost date in Alaska’s short growing season. Sow the seeds thinly and evenly, 1/4 inch deep, in moistened soilless potting mix and lightly cover them with vermiculite or sand. Maintain a soil temperature of around 70°F until the seeds germinate.
Once germinated, move the seedlings under grow lights or place them in a very bright window. Thinning the seedlings can boost growth, but it’s not essential if they are well-fertilized. When the grass-like seedlings reach 6-7 inches in length, trim them back to 1½ – 2 inches (the trimmings can be used like chives). Harden off the seedlings before transplanting them outside in late May or early June, as they can handle light frost. Alternatively, you can sow seeds directly outdoors for smaller plants if starting later in the season.
While leeks are often described as “winter hardy,” they may not survive the harsh Alaskan winter. In some areas with milder winters or where extra protection is provided, it might be possible to overwinter late-planted varieties.
