Peony Poppy Seed Blend (Papaver somniferum)

Peony Poppy Seed Blend combines the dramatic elegance of Double Purple, and the bold, mysterious Black Peony Poppies (Papaver somniferum). Each variety produces single and fully double, peony-like blooms with layers of ruffled petals that look almost too perfect to be real. Together, they create a romantic, old-world garden display that will stop visitors in their tracks.

Peony Poppy Seed Blend Growth Habit and Bloom Time Peony poppies are annuals, completing their life cycle in one season, but they self-seed freely if the seed pods are left to mature and drop seed. Once established, they return year after year with little effort, creating a naturalized effect in flower beds and borders. Expect blooms 8–12 weeks after germination, with flowers reaching 4–5 inches across atop sturdy, upright stems.

Starting Seeds Indoors For earlier blooms, start seeds 6–8 weeks before your last spring frost. Use a fine seed-starting mix and lightly press seeds into the surface, do not cover, as they need light to germinate. Mist gently to keep soil moist but not soggy. Maintain temperatures around 60–65°F, and expect germination in 10–14 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them outdoors after hardening off, spacing 10–12 inches apart in full sun with well-drained soil.

Direct Sowing for Carefree Gardens Peony poppies also thrive when direct-sown in early spring for stratification. Simply rake a prepared bed, scatter seeds evenly, and press lightly into the soil surface.

Allow some flowers to form seed pods for reseeding, these pods also make beautiful dried arrangements. In spring, thin volunteer seedlings to prevent overcrowding and encourage strong, healthy plants. With minimal care, this blend will reward you with lush, peony-like blooms in jewel-toned purples, delicate salmons, and dramatic near-black shades.
