Some people allow themselves to believe that magic has no place in the era of science. But, I am here to tell you, “They are wrong.” You see, with a little care a pig will take just about anything you give it and turn it into bacon! Can you imagine? In all seriousness, this class will talk about some fundamental considerations in raising healthy, happy pigs. Pigs will happily till your garden, eat your weeds and all those garden scraps even the chickens will not touch. And, at the end of the day, you can have a rich, healthy, and juicy pork chops, the likes of which few grocery stores in the U.S. have ever sold. We will talk about breed selection, buying or breeding weaners, housing and protection, costs, and more.
Our guest instructor: Jeremy Cowan grew up in Southern California, and cultivated a love for growing food in his family’s small backyard garden. He took that love for home grown, healthy foods all the way to a Ph.D. in horticulture (vegetable production), and is now Assistant Professor of Sustainable Food Production Systems at Kansas State University. Along the way, Jeremy picked up an interest in Permaculture, which he now incorporates in his teaching, research, and management of the K-State’s Willow Lake Student Farm. While at home, Jeremy and his wife have raised fruits, vegetables, pigs, sheep, rabbits, poultry, and a gaggle of kids.
